Sua busca pelos criminosos o leva ao local onde está sendo construída a primeira ferrovia transcontinental do país. Arranjando emprego no lugar, ele passa a conviver com diversos personagens e suas respectivas histórias, além de testemunhar a corrupção dos empresários e a exploração do trabalho de imigrantes e de negros recém libertados.
